CASMALIA SITE STABILIZATION WORK BEGINS; PUBLIC MEETING SET
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced that site stabilization work is beginning this month at the Casmalia Resources site, an inactive hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility 10 miles southwest of Santa Maria, Calif.
"We are stabilizing the site now to control the spread of contamination. We are taking this action in the context of a long-term cleanup strategy developed in cooperation with state and county agencies," said Jeff Zelikson, director of U.S. EPA's regional Hazardous Waste Management Division.
The site stabilization work, to be directed by U.S. EPA over the next year, has three major objectives. The first is to pump out and treat contaminated liquids which are spreading groundwater pollution beneath the site. The second is to minimize erosion of the temporary earthen caps covering the site's hazardous waste landfills. The third is to continue monitoring the extent of groundwater contamination. The cost of these measures is expected to be about $2 million.
An Open House to discuss these actions will be held on Aug. 29, 1992, at the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, Betteravia Government Center, 511 East Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria. Representatives of U.S. EPA, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, and Santa Barbara County will be available at the meeting to answer questions from the public and the news media.
