CASINO WORKERS RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM LAS VEGAS MEDICAL COMMUNITY
WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Ten union workers representing the 550 "permanently replaced" workers at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas will receive a house call from Dr. Elias Ghanem as they walk across the California desert.
"The workers are in great spirits, buy they are beginning to suffer from blisters," said Las Vegas Culinary Local 226 Secretary Treasurer Jim Arnold. "Dr. Ghanem, one of the leading physicians in Las Vegas, will go to the desert to examine them. He is also asking the Las Vegas medical community to donate their services to the workers and their families that don't have any medical coverage."
The workers, who were forced on strike over health and pension benefits in September 1991, walked almost 30 miles on Wednesday. They will spend the night in Amboy, Calif., and walk to Ludlow, Calif., in the morning. They are expected to reach Barstow, Calif., early Saturday morning. They began their walk in Las Vegas on Jan. 4 and will arrive in Los Angeles for a rally on Jan. 17.
