CARTER HAWLEY HALE REPORTS SEPTEMBER SAME STORE SALES INCREASED 0.8 PERCENT; TOTAL SALES DECREASED 3.1 PERCENT

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. (NYSE: CHH) today reported that same store sales for the month of September increased 0.8 percent, while total sales, which included four additional stores in the prior year, decreased 3.1 percent.
David Dworkin, president and chief executive officer, said, "Sales continue to be affected by our ongoing efforts to better focus our promotional activity, reposition our merchandise offerings and physically reallocate selling space. For example, this month's sales were affected by the elimination of a furniture sale event, the closing of three furniture departments and the commencement of construction to convert this space to more productive use. Despite the overall softness in sales, business was good in certain categories, including men's sportswear, petites, and large size women's apparel, and soft home items."
For the five weeks ended Oct. 2, 1993, total sales were $179.9 million, compared with $185.8 million in last year's period. For the 35 weeks ended Oct. 2, 1993, total sales were $1,239.4 million, a decrease of 0.7 percent, compared with the $1,248.0 million reported in 1992. On a same store basis, sales increased 2.3 percent for the 35 weeks.
Same store sales for September exclude the results from the company's tire centers, as CHH is converting these to a third-party operation.
Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. is one of the leading operators of full-line department stores in the western United States with annual sales in excess of $2.1 billion. It operates 83 department stores under the names of The Broadway, Emporium and Weinstocks.
