CARTER HAWLEY HALE REPORTS NOVEMBER SAME STORE SALES UP 2.6 PERCENT

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. (NYSE: CHH) reported that same store sales for the month of November increased 2.6 percent from the prior year period, while total sales, which included four additional stores in 1992, decreased 0.9 percent. The company also said that sales for the last half of the month were significantly higher than in the first half.
"Our business during November was much stronger than in recent months and reflects the early results of our strategic program," said David Dworkin, president and chief executive officer. "Excluding leased departments, our same store retail sales were up 4 percent for the month, with the growth led by categories where we are furthest along in implementation of our strategies. These categories include our women's dress, coat, and suit businesses; women's V.I.P. sportswear; men's sportswear and clothing.
"Although our profit performance will continue to be affected by the implementation of our strategic plan during the fourth quarter, we are beginning to benefit from the 'quick win' remodels, the last of which were completed at the end of October," Dworkin added. "When all of the above is combined with our new marketing program, we see strong customer response. This was evident over the Thanksgiving weekend, when our same store sales jumped nearly 13 percent over the prior year period."
For the four weeks ended Nov. 27, 1993, total sales were $205.0 million compared with $206.8 million in last year's period. For the 43 weeks ended Nov. 27, 1993 total sales were $1,592.1 million, a decrease of 1.2 percent compared with the $1,612.1 million reported in 1992. On a same store basis, sales increased 1.9 percent for the 43 weeks.
Same store sales since September 1993 exclude the results from the company's tire centers, as CHH is converting these to a third-party operation.
Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. is one of the leading operators of full-line department stores in the Western United States with annual sales in excess of $2.1 billion. It operates 83 department stores under the names of The Broadway, Emporium, and Weinstocks.
