CARTER HAWLEY HALE REPORTS AUGUST SALES

 LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. (NYSE: CHH) today reported that sales for the four weeks ended Aug. 28, 1993, were $142.0 million, a 3.6 percent decrease, compared with the $147.3 million reported in last year's period. On a comparable stores basis, sales decreased 0.9 percent for the month.
 David Dworkin, president and CEO, said, "August sales results continue to show softness as the result of reduced promotional activity and our efforts to reposition our merchandise offerings as part of our recently completed strategic plan. We continue to take the steps necessary to return the company to profitability, remain confident that our strategic plan is on track and see enormous potential in this business."
 For the 30 weeks ended Aug. 28, 1993, sales were $1,059.4 million, a decrease of 0.3 percent, compared with the $1,062.3 million reported in last year's period. On a comparable stores basis, sales increased 2.6 percent for the period.
 Carter Hawley Hale operated four additional stores in August of last year.
