CARTER HAWLEY HALE REPORTS APRIL SALES ROSE 11.1 PERCENT

LOS ANGELES, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. (NYSE: CHH) today reported that sales for the four weeks ended May 1, 1993, were $144.1 million, an 11.1 percent increase over the $129.7 million reported in last year's period. On a comparable stores basis, sales increased 14.6 percent for the month.
For the 13 weeks ended May 1, 1993, which is the first quarter of CHH's current fiscal year, sales were $442.4 million, an increase of 2.0 percent, compared with the $433.6 million reported in last year's period. On a comparable stores basis, sales increased 5.2 percent for the quarter.
"Customers responded well to the promotions we offered for Easter and the upcoming Mother's Day holiday," said David L. Dworkin, president and chief executive officer. "Year-to-year comparisons were distorted by the weak numbers posted last year, when we had a 10 percent comparative store decrease due to the civil disturbances in Los Angeles."
Carter Hawley Hale operated five additional stores in last year's period.
Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. is one of the nation's largest department store companies with annual sales in excess of $2.1 billion. It operates 83 department stores in the western United States under the names of The Broadway, Emporium and Weinstocks.
