CARRIER HIGH-EFFICIENCY HEATING AND COOLING EQUIPMENT TO FEATURE
GENERAL ELECTRIC'S NEW PROGRAMMABLE, ULTRA-EFFICIENT ECM (TM) MOTORS
SYRACUSE, N.Y., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Carrier Corporation today announced that its high-efficiency, variable-capacity heating and cooling equipment will feature General Electric Co.'s (NYSE: GE) new electronically commutated motors (ECMs). Over 20 percent more energy- efficient than standard induction motors, the new ECM motors were introduced by GE today at the ASHRAE (see note) meeting in Baltimore.
The programmable ECM motors will be a standard feature of Carrier's top-of-the-line WeatherMaker Infinity (TM) gas furnaces, and Infinity 2000 (TM) air conditioners, heat pumps and fan coils for residential use. They will also be installed in the Plus 90i (TM) gas furnace manufactured by Carrier under the brand names of Bryant, Day & Night, and Payne.
"We are very excited about GE's new breakthrough," said Louis Chaump, Carrier's director of residential engineering. "We have led the industry in efficiency levels using GE variable-speed motors. Upgrading our high-efficiency equipment with the second-generation ECM motors continues Carrier's ongoing commitment to produce the most environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment technologically possible."
Carrier's Infinity furnace, which uses GE's first-generation ECM motor as a standard feature, is currently the most fuel-efficient residential gas furnace available, saving on both gas and electrical consumption. Carrier's variable-capacity Infinity 2000 heat pump also has the highest Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rating, a 10.0, due in part to GE's first-generation, variable-speed motor.
"The new ECM motors not only greatly increase the efficiency levels of our equipment," said Chaump, "they also significantly reduce sound levels."
The new ECM motor features programmable controls for voltage, rotation, blower delays and many other functions, storing the information on its internal computer chips. The controls will be programmed right on Carrier's assembly line and shipped to distributors and dealers ready to connect to any standard thermostat.
Carrier will begin shipping gas furnaces with the new ECM motors in early August. Air conditioners, heat pumps and fan coils will begin shipping in October.
Carrier Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of heating and air conditioning systems and equipment. It is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), provider of a broad range of high-technology products and support services in the aerospace, building systems and automotive industries.
