CARR GOTTSTEIN FOODS CO. STARTS CONSTRUCTION OF FIRST SUPERMARKET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Carr Gottstein Foods Co. (NYSE: CGF), the largest food and drug retailer in Alaska, has started construction of its first supermarket in Alaska's Aleutian chain. The new store is in Unalaska, where the port of Dutch Harbor is located.
"We expect that the building will be completed in early February, with the store scheduled to open in March or April," said Mark R. Williams, president and chief operating officer.
The store will occupy 40,000 square feet and the building will have an additional 4,000-6,000 square feet of tenant space. Williams said that the new store will operate as an Eagle Quality Center but will include many specialty departments typically found in the larger format Carrs Quality Center stores.
"Dutch Harbor is among the top fishing ports in the United States," said Williams, "and growth has been explosive there. We're excited to be entering that market and becoming part of the development."
Williams pointed out that the year-around population in Dutch Harbor is about 4,500 and rises to approximately 50,000 during the commercial fishing season. The many large fishing vessels and processing plants located in the area during this season are also potential customers for food and supplies.
"Our Eagle store format, which offers both groceries and a broad line of general merchandise, is a perfect fit for this type of market where shopping opportunities are limited," Williams explained.
The land for the new building is being leased from Alaska International Properties Inc. on a 20-year lease, with renewal options. The new Eagle Quality Center will be in the center of a large commercial development project on land owned by a subsidiary of the Ounalashka Corp.
In mid-September, Carr Gottstein announced its business expansion into southeast Alaska through the acquisition of existing store operations in Ketchikan.
Carr Gottstein currently operates 32 stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kenai and other Alaska communities and is the largest non-government employer and food retailer in the state. Annual revenues were $557 million in 1992.
