CARR GOTTSTEIN ANNOUNCES SUPPLY AGREEMENT WITH OMNI ENTERPRISES

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Carr Gottstein Foods Co. (NYSE: CGF), the largest food and drug retailer in Alaska, today announced that it has reached an agreement to supply grocery, drug and other products to a chain of 14 stores throughout the state of Alaska.
Under the agreement, Carr Gottstein will provide stores owned and operated by OMNI Enterprises Inc. with all purchasing, distribution and freight requirements.
"This is a large wholesale contract for us," said Mark R. Williams, president and chief operating officer, "and virtually replaces business that was lost when a Canadian company acquired Alaska Commercial and switched to a different supplier last October." Williams estimates that sales to OMNI Enterprises, which operates under a variety of local names, will be in excess of $10 million annually.
Carr Gottstein will begin supplying the first stores on a phased-in basis in late January and expects to be servicing all 14 stores by the end of March. Williams pointed out that none of the stores -- which are located in outlying communities such as Barrow, Bethel, Holy Cross, King Salmon, Aniak, Dillingham, St. Mary's and Togiak -- are in areas where Carr Gottstein has or is planning to have a Carrs Quality Center or Eagle Quality Center Store.
In addition to being the only full service food wholesaler and distribution center in the state of Alaska, Carr Gottstein operates 33 stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Ketchikan, Kenai and other Alaska communities and is the largest private employer and food retailer in the state. Annual revenues were $557 million in 1992.
