CARR GOTTSTEIN ANNOUNCES EXPANSION INTO JUNEAU

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Carr Gottstein Foods Co. (NYSE: CGF), the largest food and drug retailer in Alaska, announced today that it is entering the Juneau market with construction of a new Carrs Quality Center store.
Mark R. Williams, president and chief operating officer, said that the company has finalized the purchase of property in Juneau for the new location. The store, which is planned for 62,500 square feet, will include all Carrs Quality Center specialty departments -- fresh bakery, deli, pharmacy, floral, Orient Express, European-style seafood, sushi, natural foods, 59-minute photo, as well as "the widest selection of fresh produce in Alaska."
"Our schedule calls for construction to begin in late February," said Williams, "with the store's opening anticipated in the fourth quarter of 1994." He noted that milder winters in Juneau will allow for construction to continue throughout the winter and spring months.
"Entering the Juneau market, the third largest city in Alaska, is a key part of our strategy to expand our business," Williams said. "The market area encompasses a population of more than 30,000 and is growing." Williams noted that Carr Gottstein is increasing its market penetration in southeast Alaska with its November 1993 acquisition of existing store operations in Ketchikan and the addition of the Juneau location. In addition, the company has new store under construction in Unalaska.
The new Juneau store will be located on the northwest corner of the Egan Expressway and Riverside Drive on property purchased from B.B.S. Enterprises for an undisclosed amount.
Carr Gottstein currently operates 33 stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Ketchikan, Kenai and other Alaska communities and is the largest private employer and food retailer in the state. Annual revenues were $557 million in 1992.
