CAROLINA TELEPHONE SELECTS RELIANCE COMM/TEC TO SUPPLY FIBER COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS AT FT. BRAGG, N.C.; ARMY POST WILL BE LARGEST SINGLE FIBER INSTALLATION IN U.S.
CLEVELAND, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company (CT&T) has awarded Reliance Comm/Tec Corporation, a subsidiary of Reliance Electric Company (NYSE: REE), a contract to provide Fiber- in-the-Loop (FITL) systems for Ft. Bragg, N.C., one of the largest U.S. Army posts in the world. The selection of Reliance Comm/Tec follows CT&T's agreement with military officials at Ft. Bragg to provide telephone service to soldiers living in barracks on the base. Reliance Comm/Tec's FITL systems will serve more than 4,000 access lines and will represent the largest single deployment of FITL architecture in the United States. The initial voice-based system for Ft. Bragg subsequently may be expanded to encompass data and video services for training or entertainment. Reliance Comm/Tec will begin FITL system shipments in the spring of 1993 with initial service anticipated by mid-summer 1993. The heart of the Ft. Bragg FITL system is Reliance Comm/Tec's DISC*S product, the most widely deployed next-generation digital loop carrier serving the telecommunications industry today. Prior to this award, DISC*S had an installed capacity base of more than 600,000 lines with independent telephone companies and Bell Operating Companies. The selection of DISC*S FITL at Ft. Bragg represents Reliance Comm/Tec's latest major fiber contract in the southeastern United States. In August 1992, BellSouth Telecommunications selected Reliance Comm/Tec as one of its two qualified FITL systems suppliers. Reliance is the only designated supplier of FITL for the Ft. Bragg contract. Reliance Comm/Tec Corporation, a subsidiary of Reliance Electric Company, is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. Reliance Comm/Tec is a recognized leader in local loop products and services, offering advanced technologies to the telecommunications industry worldwide. The company specializes in power, transmission, outside plant, central office and systems integration capabilities, manufacturing test systems and engineering and installation services. Reliance Electric Company designs, manufactures and services a broad range of industrial and telecommunications equipment and has annual sales in excess of $1.5 billion. Reliance operates 48 manufacturing plants worldwide in nine countries and employs approximately 14,000 people. -0- 1/19/93 /CONTACT: P.
