CAROLINA FIRST OPENS REGIONAL OFFICE IN COLUMBIA; BRINGS 150 NEW JOBS

GREENVILLE, S.C., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Carolina First Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: CAFC) today officially opened a regional headquarters office in Columbia and announced 150 new jobs for the new facility.
Governor Carroll A. Campbell, State Treasurer Grady L. Patterson, and Columbia Mayor Robert D. Coble participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony at the renovated facility at the intersection of Sumter and Lady Streets. Carolina First's regional headquarters will include mortgage banking, the investment division, administrative offices and the operations center.
Mack I. Whittle Jr., president and chief executive officer, said, "We chose downtown Columbia for this major investment because we believe in the business development of the city, and we want to be a major presence not only in the Midlands, but in downtown Columbia."
The ribbon cutting ceremony included a donation for City Year, a nonprofit youth and jobs program in Columbia.
"Our philosophy of community service is distinct from other banks," Whittle said. "We believe in creating jobs, in reaching out to individual depositors and small businesses and not treating them like numbers. Carolina First is a statewide financial institution, and we believe that the Columbia community will respond to our new way of banking, which in many respects is the old way of personal attention and customer satisfaction."
"We in South Carolina are proud of Carolina First," said Campbell. "These are our friends and our neighbors who had a good idea. Through hard work and perseverance, they are having remarkable growth. Carolina First is a South Carolina success story."
At June 30, 1993, Carolina First had $730 million in assets and market capitalization of $60 million. Carolina First Corporation, headquartered in Greenville, offers a broad range of commercial, consumer, and mortgage financial services through two subsidiaries, Carolina First Bank and Carolina First Savings Bank.
