CARLYLE OFFICIAL CALLS CONCERNS FINANCIAL, NOT SECURITY
WASHINGTON, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- An official with the Thomson- Carlyle joint venture that is trying to buy the military assets of LTV Corp. blasted his critics on the weekly PBS television series TechnoPolitics, suggesting that their concerns over the sale were actually greed in the guise of patriotism.
A bankruptcy court judge last month approved the bid by Thomson- CSF, a French-government owned company, and the Carlyle Group, an American investment house, over a lower offer by Martin Marietta Corp. and Lockheed Corp.
"This is not about patriotism. This is not about sleeping at night. It's about money," said William Conway, managing director of the Carlyle Group, in the broadcast, airing this weekend on 200 PBS affiliates across the United States.
"I can tell you the bankruptcy judge almost begged Martin and Lockheed to just pay a little more. They didn't have to top the offer. Just pay a little more. The consequences of them not doing that are that their offer was rejected -- our offer was accepted. And they're not happy."
A former NATO ambassador, Alton Keel, agreed with the Carlyle official, on TechnoPolitics, saying that the national security concerns many had over the deal were being addressed.
But Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), chairman of the defense technology subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee, called for the government to block the sale. "LTV's missile division contains some crucial core competencies that we should keep in our defense industrial base. We should not allow the sale of those to a foreign government."
TechnoPolitics is a weekly PBS series on competitiveness, science and technology and the environment. The program, in its second season, is produced by the Blackwell Corp., Washington. Neal Freeman is executive producer. The program is seen in more than 200 markets each week. Locally, it airs Tuesday at 11 p.m. on WETA-TV Channel 26.
