CARLSON HOSPITALITY GROUP, INC. AND HOSPITALITY FRANCHISE SYSTEMS, INC. ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

 PARSIPPANY, N.J., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Carlson Hospitality Group, Inc. today joined with Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc. (NYSE: HFS), in announcing a strategic alliance agreement to generate expansion opportunities for both companies in their respective segments of the world's hotel and restaurant industries.
 Carlson Hospitality Group, Inc. includes Radisson Hotels International, Colony Hotels & Resorts, T.G.I. Friday's Restaurants, Country Inns By Carlson and Country Kitchen Restaurants. Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc. is a worldwide franchiser of Days Inn and Howard Johnson and the franchiser of Ramada in the United States.
 Under terms of the agreement, both organizations will cooperate in referring new business opportunities in appropriate areas of their operations. Examples of this cooperation would include development of Country Kitchen Restaurants or T.G.I. Friday's Restaurants adjacent to Hospitality Franchise Systems franchised lodging operations or referral of new franchise and management opportunities in lodging products between both organizations in non-competing categories.
 The agreement also contemplates a cooperative buying arrangement designed to reduce costs in purchasing of equipment, supplies and services by both organizations and their franchisees.
 The companies have also agreed to look into further opportunities of working cooperatively.
 Joining in the announcement of this strategic alliance today were Juergen Bartels, president of Carlson Hospitality Group, Inc., and Henry Silverman, chairman of Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc.
 "We expect that this new alliance will be an important asset in our plans for accelerated growth in the hospitality and restaurant industries during the 1990s," Bartels stated. "The combined development activities of both our organizations -- which are far reaching throughout the hospitality industry -- are destined to produce many opportunities for new business in both restaurants and lodging which we will share under the terms of this agreement," he added.
 "The respected product offerings of Carlson Hospitality Group with its upscale hotel positioning and successful restaurant concepts, will provide viable and profitable new alternatives and opportunities for franchisees within Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc.," Silverman said.
 Officials of both companies emphasized that each of the organizations' product lines, which have distinctive markets and positioning within the industry, will not be changed by this strategic alliance.
 Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc. is the world's largest hotel franchiser with more than 2,400 properties comprising nearly 300,000 guest rooms. Corporate headquarters is located in Parsippany. The company's common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol HFS.
 Carlson Hospitality Group, Inc. includes 327 hotels representing 72,881 guest rooms around the world. The company is in the midst of an aggressive global growth program adding one new location approximately every eight days. Carlson Hospitality Group is part of Carlson Companies Inc., one of America's largest private corporations with systemwide revenues in excess of $9.3 billion.
