 CARL'S JR. OPENS 200th FRANCHISE RESTAURANT;
 EXPANDS INTO NORTHWEST WITH NEW RESTAURANT IN PORTLAND, ORE.
 ANAHEIM, Calif. March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Carl Karcher Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ: CARL), parent company for the Carl's Jr. quick-service restaurant chain, announced the opening of its 200th franchise unit, located in Portland, Ore.
 Franchised by Jay Nuccio, son of the founders of the famous Little Joe's restaurant in Los Angeles, the store is the northernmost of the 627-unit Carl's Jr. restaurant chain.
 Nuccio Foods Inc.'s aggressive development strategy calls for the opening of five restaurants in the area within 18 months, and several more over the next five years.
 "Portland is a dynamic, growing city with great residents," said Nuccio. "The Carl's Jr. concept of good tasting, high-quality food products is a positive one for health-conscious Oregonians and one I'm sure they'll take to quickly."
 A mural of downtown Portland graces one entire wall of the restaurant, located in the heart of the business district at 508 S.W. Taylor St. Nuccio called the unique, high-visibility restaurant one of the most beautiful restaurants in the entire Carl's Jr. chain.
 "I'm really excited to be part of the Carl's Jr. team," said Nuccio, whose family relationship with Carl Karcher goes back many years. "When the Karchers invited me to go to Portland with them, I jumped at the opportunity. This is a company with a real family atmosphere, and I'm sure it will be as well-received in Portland as it has been across Oregon so far."
 Currently, seven Carl's Jr. restaurants operate in Cottage Grove, Eugene, Grants Pass, Medford, Roseburg and Springfield, Ore.
 "We are truly excited to be associated with Mr. Nuccio as his invaluable experience in the industry, combined with Carl's Jr.'s high- quality standards and premium position in the quick-service industry, will enable us to be a successful member of this dynamic Portland community," said Don Karcher, president of Carl Karcher Enterprises.
 Carl's Jr., a regional chain of quick-service restaurants, is distinguished by its varied menu of charbroiled hamburgers and chicken sandwiches and other healthful, premium-quality products. Founded in 1941, the company, its franchisees and licensees operate more than 600 restaurants in California, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia and China.
