CARL'S JR. CELEBRATES OPENING OF FLAGSHIP RESTAURANT IN
MONTERREY, MEXICO, AND LICENSE SIGNING FOR BAJA CALIFORNIA
ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Carl Karcher Enterprises Inc. (NASDAQ: CARL), parent company for the Carl's Jr. quick-service restaurant chain, today announced the opening of a second restaurant in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and the pending agreement of a third international licensee in Mexico.
The Monterrey restaurant will serve as a flagship for Carl's Jr.'s international expansion within the Mexican Republic. In terms of square footage, it is the world's largest free-standing Carl's Jr. The uniquely designed 340-seat restaurant features a contemporary decor, a party room with seating for 65 people, and a climate-controlled playground area of approximately 2,500 square feet.
Steve Kishi, vice president of international and franchise development, said, "The new Monterrey restaurant is truly a showcase, and the enclosed climate-controlled play area will enable family birthday parties year-round."
A private grand opening party was held at the restaurant the evening of Feb. 25, which included an appearance by Carl's Jr. founder and chairman, Carl Karcher, and the owner of Carl's Jr. de Monterrey, Jesus Gracia. In keeping with a 10-unit development plan, Gracia and his company, Carl's Jr. de Monterrey, will open a third restaurant in Monterrey this summer.
In addition, the company announced that on Feb. 28 it will sign its third international licensing agreement for Mexico, which will bring Carl's Jr. Restaurants to Baja California. The agreement is scheduled to be signed with a Tijuana-based investment group headed by Ascan Lutteroth and Eduardo Castro. The first restaurant is planned for late 1992 in Tijuana.
"This latest signing further demonstrates the market for Carl's Jr.'s premium quality concept in Mexico," Kishi added. "There is tremendous demand for Carl's Jr. in Mexico City, which will now become our next target market for signing."
Carl's Jr. has a total of 15 internationally licensed restaurants in Japan, Malaysia and Mexico, and additional openings are expected soon in Guadalajara, Mexico; Kuala Lumpur and Penang, Malaysia; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Carl's Jr., a western regional chain of quick-service restaurants, is distinguished by its varied menu of charbroiled hamburgers and chicken sandwiches, and other healthful, premium-quality products. Founded in 1941, the company, its franchisees and licensees operate more than 600 restaurants in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Japan, Malaysia and Mexico.
