CAREY DETAILS 'ALL OUT' TEAMSTER EFFORT TO ELECT CLINTON
AND WIN ACTION ON THE ECONOMY, HEALTH CARE AND TRADE
As the presidential election moves into its final weeks, new Teamster President Ron Carey says his union is going all-out to support the Clinton-Gore ticket and to win federal action on the economy, national health insurance and fair trade.
At a National Press Club luncheon speech tomorrow, Carey will detail what his union is doing to mobilize its members to promote those issues and to carry the Democratic ticket over the top on election day.
Carey will describe an unprecedented Teamster mobilization that includes voter registration, a massive member education effort and public outreach through rallies and caravans.
A caravan co-sponsored by the Teamsters along with the AFL-CIO and the Fair Trade Campaign is touring California to raise public awareness of the economic and environmental harm that Bush's proposed North American Free Trade Agreement will cause. Carey is also planning an October swing through the Midwest to meet with Teamster members and urge them to vote for Clinton and other candidates who support working people's issues.
The 1.5 million member union has not backed a Democrat for president since 1968.
Carey's speech will be delivered at the National Press Club, 14th and F streets N.W., Washington, on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. It will be broadcast live over National Public Radio and taped for later broadcast over C-SPAN.
