BOCA RATON, Fla., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) today announced the appointment of Executive Vice President Hugh L. Carey, former governor of New York, as director of Grace's Government Relations Division, based in Washington. Carey succeeds Alan D. Carey has been in charge of the Grace Office of Environmental Policy (OEP) since joining Grace in 1987. In his new position, Carey will relocate to the Washington, D.C. area. A successor to Carey's OEP position has not been named. Judith L. In announcing this appointment, J. P. Bolduc, Grace president and CEO, said, "Governor Carey brings a long and distinguished career in both congressional and gubernatorial service to our Washington office. He became a Deputy Whip and framed several pieces of landmark legislation on education, the rights of the disabled and revenue sharing.
He served as governor of New York from 1974 to 1982 and was the architect of the financial plan that prevented the bankruptcy of New York City. He also instituted a sweeping program of fiscal reform and economic development to restore the state's viability. As governor, he received several environmental awards and was instrumental in completing a number of clean air and water projects. Currently, Carey serves as chairman of the newly formed National Institute of Former Governors.
A graduate of St. John's University, he received his B.A. in 1947 and his J.D. from that school in 1951.
Hofmann, prior to joining Grace in 1990, had a career in the federal government including eight years as assistant secretary for Administration and Management in the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She is a graduate of the University of Hawaii.
