CARETENDERS HEALTHCORP TO BECOME FIRST FOR-PROFIT PROVIDER OF ADULT DAY HEALTH CARE SERVICES IN CALIFORNIA

CARETENDERS HEALTHCORP TO BECOME FIRST FOR-PROFIT PROVIDER
OF ADULT DAY HEALTH CARE SERVICES IN CALIFORNIA
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Caretenders HealthCorp (NASDAQ: CTND) announced today that it will become the first for-profit provider of adult day health care services in California.
William Yarmuth, Caretenders chairman, president and CEO, said the company has received approval from the California Department of Aging to initiate a pilot project under which it will open five for-profit adult day health care centers between now and the end of 1993, and up to seven more in the first six months of 1994.
California has heretofore prohibited for-profit adult day care centers from operating in the state. Fewer than seventy (70) adult day care centers serve the California population of more than 25 million.
According to John Sneath, president of Caretenders' adult day care operations, California currently needs at least an additional 280 centers to serve its population. Other estimates place the number of new adult day health care centers needed in California at between 800 and 1000 centers. "Opening for-profit adult day health care centers in California presents a tremendous opportunity for our company," according to Sneath.
The company operates nine adult day care centers, under the name "Almost Family," in Connecticut and Maryland; and plans to open new centers in Massachusetts, Maryland and New Jersey in this fiscal year. It is the largest provider of adult day care services in the country, with an enrollment of over 600. Nationwide, approximately 60,000 people are served in adult day care centers. Yarmuth said that Almost Family will notify the California officials of the sites for the five pilot centers before the end of 1992, and the company intends to open the first California centers by July 1, 1993. The company has established a goal of 70 centers by 1996. Caretender HealthCorp provides adult day care services and comprehensive home health care services in several markets in Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, Massachusetts, Virginia, Connecticut and Maryland. The company reported revenue of $42 million for fiscal year 1992.
