 NORTHBROOK, Ill., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Caremark International (NYSE: CK) today announced Sandra Harden Austin has been named president of headquarters operations for its Healthcare Services Division, a new position effective Jan. 1. She joins the international alternate site health care company from The University of Chicago Hospitals, where she has served as executive vice president and chief operating officer since 1990.
 "Sandra brings us 22 years of diversified health care experience and recognized leadership abilities, as well as proven expertise in managing health care operating expense and improving patient services," said Caremark International President And Chief Operating Officer Jim Connelly. "She is a very welcome addition to our senior management team."
 Reporting to Connelly, Austin will be accountable for the headquarters-based operations of Caremark's Healthcare Services Division, including systems, marketing, clinical operations, quality assurance and regulatory affairs, operations and human resources, as well as the Caremark Specialty Pharmaceutical Services business unit, which includes the company's Protropin and clozapine initiatives.
 The division provides a broad range of therapies and related services to patients with digestive and infectious diseases, cancer, immune deficiencies, AIDS/HIV, high-risk pregnancies, schizophrenia and growth deficiency, among other conditions.
 "Sandra's distinguished record of achievement is concentrated equally in budgetary, financial and operations management, strategic planning, marketing and business development, legislative affairs, direct patient care and social welfare," Connelly said. Austin, who holds law and public health administration degrees, was accountable for The University of Chicago Hospitals' 650-bed academic medical center, its 5,000 employees and a $350 million operating budget.
 Prior to The University of Chicago Hospitals, Austin served as senior vice president and general manager of the largest management center of the University Hospitals of Cleveland. She was also responsible for all financial, human resources and patient care activities in the Departments of Medicine, Psychiatry, Surgery, Anesthesiology, Neurology, Orthopedics and Otolaryngology.
 Austin was president of Huron Road Hospital in Cleveland, after serving in progressively responsible senior management positions there from 1981 to 1988. She has also worked as a health analyst and strategic planner and an independent consultant. She began her career as a nurse.
 Austin holds a law degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, a master's degree in public health administration from the University of Michigan and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve University.
