CARDSCAN SOFTWARE AUTOMATICALLY READS, FILES, AND RETRIEVES INFORMATION FROM BUSINESS CARDS; NEW WINDOWS SOFTWARE USES SCANNER TO REDUCE CLUTTER

BOSTON, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Corex Technologies, Inc. today announced CardScan(TM), a new Windows-based software program that reads, understands, extracts, and files information from business cards for immediate access by users. CardScan automatically recognizes names, titles, company names, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, and E-Mail addresses, and stores them in its built-in address book database. Users can instantly view scanned card images, add custom notes to records, and browse and search for information using CardScan's simple, Rolodex-like display.
CardScan is easy to learn and master, and works with a variety of hand-held, portable, and flat-bed scanners, including battery-operated scanners. The program prints to many popular personal organizer and label formats, works with notebook computers, and can share data with a host of popular software and personal organizers, including Lotus Organizer, ACT!, PackRat, and Sharp Wizard. The program supports ASCII and dBase formats. CardScan will be available in Q4 of 1993.
To use CardScan the user simply feeds a business card into the scanner. The program scans and stores each card's image in less than 10 seconds at 300 dpi resolution. CardScan uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and parsing algorithms to identify and extract names, titles, addresses, phone numbers, and E-mail addresses. Using image enhancement algorithms, the program can decipher textual information printed in small or lightly-printed fonts, and can handle cards containing many graphical elements such as corporate logos or handwritten text.
"If your desk is piled high with hundreds of business cards, as mine was, you're a candidate for CardScan," said Corex President and CEO Jonathan Stern. "Your business cards contain vital information, and all too often you can't find that critical phone number when you really need it. That's why we developed CardScan. It takes the drudgery out of handling business cards by automatically transferring all the information to your computer in just seconds, while preserving the image of each card. The program lets you search through your own personal notes, too, so you'll never lose information again. The built-in free- form searching feature makes finding information straightforward, simple, and fast. Now you can find a phone number in seconds instead of minutes."
