CARD ESTABLISHMENT SERVICES TO BUILD NEW DATA CENTER IN HAGERSTOWN

HAGERSTOWN, Md., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Card Establishment Services, Inc. (CES), the second largest payment processor in the country, today announced its plans to build a new $14 million data center in Hagerstown. The new 120,000-square-foot facility, which will be located at Gateway Business Park, will house CES' data processing, network command and operations centers. Operations in the new building are scheduled to begin in the early quarter of 1994.
Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer, along with Richard Roulette, president of the Washington County Board of Commissioners, and Mark L. Wasserman, secretary of the Department of Economic and Employment Development (DEED), today attended the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility.
"The decision by CES to remain in Hagerstown is a tremendous economic victory for Washington County and for the State of Maryland," said Governor Schaefer. The Governor noted that CES will be contributing approximately $99 million to the regional economy by the end of fiscal year 1994. In addition, CES, which currently employs more than 400 people in Hagerstown, is expected to grow this number to over 650 by the end of fiscal year 1994.
"We are grateful to the City of Hagerstown, Washington County, and to the State for working with us to make it possible for CES to maintain our data center in the great State of Maryland," said John C. Elliott, CES chairman and chief executive officer.
CES, headquartered in Melville, N.Y., will be leasing the new building from an entity controlled by Gilbane Properties, Inc., of Providence, R.I., which will also be developing the facility. The building's architect is Morgan Gick & Associates, Falls Church, Va., with engineering services being provided by Davis, Renn & Associates, Hagerstown, Md. Attorneys from Godfrey & Kahn S.C., Milwaukee, Wis., and Tydings and Rosenberg, Baltimore, served as the developer's outside counsel. Real estate consulting firm Julien J. Studley Inc., Bethesda, Md., represented CES in the negotiations, along with attorneys from Semmes, Bowen & Semmes, Baltimore. Whitney, Inc., Oak Brook, Ill., provided CES with architectural consulting services.
CES, which was previously a part of Citicorp, was sold in 1992 to a group of investors led by Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, the Prudential Company and William Blair & Company. The company will be vacating the Citicorp operations center in Hagerstown once the new facility is completed.
CES provides payment processing for 150,000 businesses and financial institutions nationwide, representing almost 225,000 outlets, and handles more than 450 million transactions per year. Services include authorization and settlement for credit/debit cards, travel and entertainment cards, proprietary cards and checks. Cardnet, CES' proprietary transaction delivery network, supports toll-free service to over 105,000 terminals and electronic cash registers.
