CAR-CARVERS COMPETE AT THE PINEWOOD DERBY.

Byline: Angela Randazzo Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY - Members of Cub Scout Pack 3621 got a taste of the Indy 500 when their wooden hot boxes took off during the recent Pinewood Derby competition.

Brandon Watts, 9, took the checkered flag with his car, painted in glossy red with orange-and-yellow flame decals. Second-place honors went to Zachary Wiedhopf, a Webelo, and third place went to Timothy Roach, a Wolf Den Cub.

Watts' uncle, Ron Newell Jr., helped build the car, which took about eight hours to get just right. Although Brandon was thrilled to win first place, he said the best part of the derby was making his car.

This year's annual Pinewood Derby was held Jan. 29 at Good Shepherd Lutheran School, an event that drew 27 racers.

Among the family members there to cheer Watts on were his parents, Dion and Marie-Theraes Watts of Simi Valley, his preschool brother, Christian, and his grandparents.

``It was fun. We were all at the race cheering him on,'' said Ron Newell, Watts' grandfather, who joined Brandon's parents and brother at the event. ``That's what Scouting is about - supporting these youngsters whether they win or lose.''

Watts is a third-grader at Good Shepherd Lutheran School. He is a member of the Bear Den and has been in Scouting for two years.
