CANON MOVES TO BE FULL-LINE COPIER SUPPLIER
IN COLOR AND BLACK-AND-WHITE COPIER MARKETS
NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move to provide its dealers and customers with the best and most complete copier product lineup, Canon U.S.A., Inc. today announced that Canon aims to strengthen its worldwide position as a full-line supplier of color and black-and-white copiers.
To meet this objective, an office equipment alliance between Canon Inc. (ADRs - NASDAQ: CANNY) and Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) announced in July of this year will play a key role in Canon's business strategy. As a result, Canon Inc. and Kodak will be involved in joint R&D and manufacturing projects, transforming an OEM supplier relationship into a strategic alliance.
Starting next year, Canon and qualified Canon copier dealers expect to market select Kodak high-volume copiers under the Canon brand in North America in a move to augment their low- and mid-volume Canon copier lineup. In the second stage of the alliance, Canon Inc. and Kodak will undertake joint development of the next-generation copier. In the future, the alliance intends to explore opportunities in a wide variety of additional imaging technology areas.
"This alliance gives Canon dealers an edge in the highly-competitive office equipment market, providing Canon with the broadest product line in the copier market," said Haruo Murase, executive vice president of Canon U.S.A. "It further serves to establish our dealers as the industry's premier single-source copier supplier with products that meet each and every customer's copying needs.
"Most importantly, both Canon and Kodak can capitalize on each other's strengths, giving us the ability to quickly produce the best products for global markets," said Murase.
In the color copier market, Canon has been the leader for six years. In June, the company introduced a low-end desktop color copier/printer/scanner to complement its mid- and high-end Color Laser Copiers, providing authorized Canon dealers with the industry's only complete line of color copiers covering all price segments.
Canon currently manufactures and markets a full line of office equipment, including color copiers, black-and-white personal and office copiers, facsimile machines, optical filing systems, micrographics equipment, systems-integrated equipment, printers and computers, professional calculators and personal publishing systems. In 1991, Canon Inc. reached almost $15 billion in worldwide sales with the North American market comprised of $4 billion.
