CANON COMPUTER SYSTEMS INTRODUCES NEXT-GENERATION BUBBLE JET PRINTER
TO RIVAL LASERS; NEW STANDARD ENDORSED BY INDEPENDENT END-USER STUDY
COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Canon Computer Systems Inc. (CCSI) today introduced the Bubble Jet (BJ)-200, a small, compact printer designed for personal use and features next-generation Bubble Jet technology. In an independent study, the BJ-200's output was preferred four to five times to Hewlett-Packard's DeskJet inkjet printer. In addition, the BJ-200 can print on a variety of paper types and envelopes, and its printing speed is faster than many laser printers. Its low price, $549 manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), will provide price conscious consumers an affordable option for laser quality performance at dot-matrix prices.
"The new generation of Bubble Jet technology has more than 100 patents and offers the highest quality output ever," said Peter Bergman, CCSI's vice president, marketing. "We just raised the ante on Bubble Jet output quality and performance, and our investment in Bubble Jet will continue to grow."
Also announced today was a family of laser printers and a line of desktop and notebook personal computers aimed at the small business and home office markets.
 End-User Research
In a recent independent test conducted by ConsumerQuest, a Los Angeles-based market research firm, 80 percent of the people tested nationwide preferred BJ-200 output to the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 500, the leading ink-jet printer in the personal computer printer market. In addition, more than half of the people surveyed thought that output from the Canon BJ-200 had been generated by a laser printer -- setting a new output standard for Bubble Jet/ink jet technology.
The CCSI printer also rivals the printing speed of 4-page-per-minute laser printers. The BJ-200 has three print speed modes: High-Speed (draft mode), High-Quality (letter-quality) and Super High-Quality. The printing speeds for letter-quality output is 248 characters per second (cps).
 The BJ-200's Bubble Jet Technology
Bubble Jet technology was first discovered in the late 1970s at the Canon Research Center in Japan. Bubble Jet prints via ink droplets shot out from very fine nozzles heated briefly and precisely. The BJ-200 has substantially increased the number of refinements to this proven technology. Canon intends to build upon these refinements throughout the 1990s, with the goal of using Bubble Jet technology as the basis of new generations of monochrome and color printers, fax machines, multifunction and other products.
 BJ-200 Specifications
The BJ-200 has a new, 64-nozzle print head capable of placing ink at 6,200 droplets per second, or more than 100 percent faster than previous Bubble Jet printers and more than 72 percent faster than the H-P DeskJet 500 printer. The new printer also has a much faster stepper motor; a native mode that compresses graphics files and prints only when needed; a skip mode to move rapidly from character to character; a straight paper path for smoother paper handling; and a 16-bit processor.
The BJ-200 weighs a mere 6.6 pounds and measures 13.7 inches wide by 7.6 inches deep by 6.8 inches high. CCSI's Bubble Jet products carry a two-year warranty.
 Pricing and Availability
The BJ-200 will be available Nov. 2 and will carry a suggested retail price of $549. The printer will be distributed through distributors, dealers and mass merchants.
