CANON COMPUTER SYSTEMS CUTS PRINTER PRICES UP TO 30 PERCENT; LASER- QUALITY PRINTING NOW PRICE-COMPETITIVE WITH 24-PIN DOT MATRIX PRINTERS

COSTA MESA, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Canon Computer Systems Inc. (CCSI) today announced aggressive price reductions on its entire line of Bubble Jet printer products for the small office/home office (SOHO) market. In a move to establish new price/performance standards, CCSI has cut printer prices up to 30 percent. The price reductions are effective immediately and affect manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRPs).
In a related announcement, CCSI launched a three-month $50 end user rebate program for its successful BJ-200 desktop printer that begins March 1, and ends May 31. CCSI anticipates that end users who take advantage of the rebate will be able to purchase the desktop printer for less than $299 in most areas. At this price, the BJ-200 will be the most affordable printer on the market that rivals laser quality printing. Today, street prices for 24-pin dot matrix printers range from $200 to $400.
"Bubble Jet/ink jet printers are the fastest growing segment of today's printer market, outpacing both dot matrix and lasers," said Peter Bergman, vice president of Marketing of CCSI. "CCSI intends to establish a leadership position in this market by producing aggressively priced Bubble Jet printers that make high-quality printing affordable to a much broader base of computer users. In fact, we believe that Canon's Bubble Jet technology is the first real threat to the dot matrix market."
 New Printer Pricing
CCSI's manufacturer's suggested retail price reductions are as follows:
Printer Model Old Price New Price Reduction
 -- BJ-10ex Portable $ 499 $ 349 30 percent
 -- BJ-200 Desktop $ 549 $ 449 18 percent
 -- BJ-300 Business $ 699 $ 499 29 percent
 -- BJ-330 Wide Carriage $ 849 $ 699 18 percent
 -- BJC-800 Color (PC) $2,795 $1,999 28 percent
 -- BJC-820 Color (Mac) $2,995 $2,199 27 percent
 Bubble Jet/Ink Jet Market Growth
In 1992, ink jet printers accounted for 16.5 percent and serial dot matrix printers accounted for 52 percent of the 8.9 million units sold in the United States, according to market research firm International Data Corp., of Framingham, Mass. Analysts anticipate that ink jet printers will overtake laser printers and erode the dot matrix market by the mid-1990s. This rapid acceleration of ink jet printer sales is further endorsed by BIS Strategic Decisions of Norwell, Mass., which foresees dollar sales of ink jet printers reaching more than $2 billion by 1995.
Between April and December 1992, unit shipments of CCSI's Bubble Jet printer line more than doubled, according to InfoCorp., a market research firm based in Santa Clara, Calif. CCSI was founded in April 1992.
 Bubble Jet Technology Benefits
CCSI contends there are nine benefits of Bubble Jet technology that no other printer technology offers today: ease of use, low cost, compact size, high-quality, low power consumption, high speed, color, superior paper handling and plain paper printing.
"With advances in our print head, software, paper handling and ink technologies, combined with the price reductions, CCSI is positioned to obtain a significant share of the ink jet market by the end of 1993," said Bergman.
 The Bubble Jet Product Family
