CANON CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF BJ-200 WITH $30 CONSUMER REBATE

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Canon Computer Systems Inc. (CCSI) today announced it is offering a $30 consumer rebate to celebrate the first anniversary of the BJ-200 which has become a runaway success in the retail ink jet printer market. In the tradition of giving a gift of paper on the first anniversary, Canon gives consumers their favorite kind of paper: cash back. With the use of the rebate, effective immediately, the product cost is expected to be about $269. Canon's 11" x 17" model, the BJ-230, is also included in the program which runs through Dec. 31, 1993.
"With our Paper Anniversary Rebate, we've made our best-selling laser-quality printer even better for the price-conscious consumer," said Peter Bergman, vice president of marketing. "Moreover, we're supporting our dealers with an aggressive schedule of consumer advertising and exciting point-of-sale merchandising during the most important retail selling season of the year."
Achieves Significant Brand Status in Consumer Electronics Channel
In less than one year since its October 1992 introduction, the BJ-200 achieved the highest market penetration (62 percent) in the consumer electronics retail channel, upstaging market leaders like Hewlett-Packard and Lexmark (IBM) according to Neretin Associates, a retail research firm in Maplewood, N.J.
Neretin Associates surveyed 250 key retail stores which control more than 25 percent of the total national consumer electronics market in telephone interviews conducted during the second quarter of this year. this supports an April 1993 survey reported by Merrin Information Services in Palo Alto, Calif. The Merrin study was triggered by what appeared to be an emerging sales trend reported by Scoreboard(R) Channel Tracking Services from InfoCorp in Santa Clara, Calif., in which CCSI's BJ-200 Bubble Jet printer was outselling the HP Deskjet 500 ink jet printer by more than 2:1 when the printers were sold in the same stores. The Bubble Jet or ink jet market now accounts for more than 18 percent of all printer sales, making it the fastest growing segment of the printer market according to market analysts at International Data Corp. in Framingham, Mass.
Affordable Laser Quality in a Personal Desktop Printer
The BJ-200 desktop and BJ-230 wide carriage have a resolution of 360 dpi (dots per inch) which rivals many laser-quality printers. The BJ-200 printer family are the first CCSI products to incorporate Canon's next generation disposable ink cartridge, the BC-02. The BC-02 features a new 64-nozzle print head that precisely places 6,200 droplets of ink per second per nozzle. The specially formulated ink is fast-drying which ensure high quality output even for the smallest details of both text and graphics.
