CANANDAIGUA WINE CLOSES TWO FACILITIES

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Canandaigua Wine Company, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: WINEA, WINEB) announced today the closing of its Tenner Brothers, Inc. production facility in Patrick, S.C. and its California Products Company facility in Fresno, Calif. The company expects these closings to occur on Oct. 1, 1993 an Dec. 31, 1993, respectively.
Marvin Sands, chairman of the board, said "These closings are the result of our production facilities which demonstrated that significant efficiencies could be achieved by integrating these operations at other locations." Mr. Sands further stated, "While we find these closings to be regretful, the company will be better positioned to operate its remaining facilities more efficiently and fulfill its goal of delivering the best possible value to its customers. Although we expect the cost savings associated with these closings to be significant, they are not expected to have a material impact on earnings. No other plant closings are expected."
Canandaigua is the third largest wine producer in the United States. After these plant closings, it will operate nine wineries in New York and California. Its principal brands include "Wild Irish Rose", "Cook's", "Cisco", "Manischewitz", "J. Roget", "Cribari", "Marcus James", "Widmer's", "Mateus" and "Dunnewood". Canandaigua recently announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Barton Incorporated, the nation's fourth largest beer importer and eighth largest producer and marketer of distilled spirits.
