CANAL PLUNGE HORROR; Search for 4x4 driver.

Byline: Record Reporter

DESPERATE rescue workers yesterday failed to save a driver from a canal.

A 4x4 was spotted careering into the Caledonian Canal in Inverness. It quickly disappeared into the 20ft deep murky water.

Police were immediately alerted and a lifeboat crew, coastguard, fire and rescue services and an ambulance rushed to the scene.

But they were unable to find the car using a grappling iron and an underwater camera. Later, they abandoned the search until a diving team could arrive from Grampian Police.

One eyewitness said: "We saw the 4x4 come down the road and drive on to the car park, miss a couple of other vehicles and a big bollard and drive off the canal wall into the water.

"No one tried to escape and it dropped out of sight rapidly. It didn't look as if the driver had lost control for any reason so it's a mystery."

Police said no one had been reported missing but they will be checking CCTV images to try to get the car's registration.
