CANADA SAFEWAY EMPLOYEES APPROVE LABOR AGREEMENT

OAKLAND, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Canada Safeway Ltd., a subsidiary of Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY), announced that its employees have approved a new labor agreement in Alberta, Canada.
Norm Leaf, senior vice-president and Alberta Division manager, expressed gratitude and optimism in a letter to the 7,900 retail employees:
"Canada Safeway is much better positioned today to compete with the low-cost operators in the Alberta market. Our aggressive pricing strategy is helping to win customers back ... This essential step in rebuilding our business could not have occurred without your cooperation."
Safeway agreed to strengthen existing joint labor-management committees and establish a gain-sharing committee with employees in each Alberta store. A feature of the agreement involves the implementation of a voluntary buy-out program.
Canada Safeway's cost-cutting efforts, which have focused on all areas of the Alberta operations, are designed to provide the foundation for long-term viability in the intensely competitive Alberta marketplace.
