CAMPBELL SOUP MAKING MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENT IN TORONTO PLANT; ADDING JOBS

CAMDEN, N.J., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB) said today that it is increasing production at its Toronto, Ontario plant in a move to drive better capacity utilization and cost effectiveness across its North American operations.
"Our position in the intensely competitive food processing industry will be significantly improved by this investment in the Toronto plant, through improved capacity utilization and related cost improvements," said Herb Baum,

President of Campbell North and South America.
The decision to increase production at Toronto was taken after lengthy study to broaden production capabilities at all Campbell's North American facilities and to provide flexibility to serve Canadian and U.S. markets.
The Campbell North and South America Division was formed in January, 1992 to take advantage of the emerging "common market" linking Canada, the United States and Mexico. The western hemisphere's eventual emergence as a powerful trading bloc will provide a critical advantage toward competing with the trading blocs of the Pacific Rim countries and the European Common Market.
"This investment in production facilities will also help strengthen U.S. trade ties in Canada prior to the anticipated inauguration next year of the North American Free Trade Agreement," Baum said. "As a focused, strengthened part of NAFTA, Campbell will be well equipped to compete successfully with European and Asian firms worldwide," he said.
Campbell's Toronto plant currently employs 700 full-time hourly and salaried people. It produces a variety of canned soups, spaghetti sauces, beans, canned pasta products and juices.
