CAMPBELL SOUP'S HERB BAUM ELECTED 1992 NFPA CHAIRMAN
 DALLAS, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Herbert M. Baum, president,

Campbell North and South America, Campbell Soup Company, was elected chairman of the board of directors of the National Food Processors Association at its 85th annual convention in Dallas today.
Baum will provide guidance to NFPA's leadership during 1992 as the association carries out its programs in scientific affairs, government affairs, and public communications.
In acceptance remarks, Baum set five goals for NFPA for 1992:
1.) See that the effective date of new federal food labeling rules is extended for one year. Baum called the existing six-month deadline "unworkable and totally unrealistic," and said it would cost the food industry some $3.3 billion to meet it. "Trying to do too much too soon at such a high cost is against the interest of consumers," he added.
2.) Centralize NFPA scientific operations. Baum announced a study to begin this month to explore options r? consolidating NFPA's two major laboratories. "A world-class facility will enhance our credibility among those who determine policies affecting our industry," Baum said.
3.) Be more effective in shaping legislation. Baum said NFPA has a "can-do staff that knows how to change congressional thinking, and we want to build on this solid record of achievement for both federal and state issues," Baum said. "I'm not going to be shy about addressing the issues. I'm ready to lead the charge," he added.
4.) Create an international presence for NFPA. "The food business has gone global ... NFPA cannot afford to be solely a U.S. association," Baum said. He noted that NFPA has an affiliation with the Campden Food and Drink Research Association in the United Kingdom and has received a $500,000 grant from the Department of Commerce to establish a laboratory facility in Warsaw, Poland, to work on food safety issues and help American food companies play an active role in restructuring the Central European food industry.
5.) Demonstrate that NFPA is a modern association with aggressive, progressive people who can get the job done. Baum said he would work in partnership with NFPA President John R. Cady "to give NFPA the higher profile I want it to have."
NFPA is the scientific voice of the food industry. The association's three laboratories serve NFPA's 500 member companies, manufacturers of the nation's processed-packaged fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, seafood, juices and drinks, and specialty products.
