CAMI STRIKE COULD AFFECT BESTOP'S FOURTH QUARTER RESULTS

CAMI STRIKE COULD AFFECT BESTOP'S FOURTH QUARTER RESULTS
BROOMFIELD, Colo., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Bestop Inc. (NASDAQ: BTOP) indicated today that the CAMI Automotive Inc. strike in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada could affect up to 8 percent of Bestop's sales for the upcoming fourth quarter ending Dec. 26, 1992 if the two-week old strike lasts through the entire fourth quarter.
"It is impossible to predict how long a strike of this nature may go on. Although the strike will not have a material effect on third quarter results, we wanted to make sure our shareowners were aware of the problem and its potential impact on the fourth quarter," said Richard E. Sabourin, chief executive officer of Bestop. "Naturally, we are hopeful it will end soon. Meanwhile, demand from our existing customer base remains strong."
Prior to the strike, Bestop's sales to CAMI were approximately $240,000 per month or about $720,000 over a three-month period. Bestop supplies about half of CAMI's soft tops for the Geo Tracker.
CAMI, a joint venture of General Motors of Canada Ltd. and Suzuki Motors, manufactures Geo Tracker small sport utility vehicles at its Ingersoll plant. The Canadian Auto Workers Union began a strike against CAMI at the plant on Sept. 14, 1992, halting production at that plant. According to published reports, there have been no talks between the union and management and no talks have been scheduled.
Bestop is the leading designer and manufacturer in North America of automotive soft tops and accessories for small sport utility vehicles. The company went public in August of this year with 925,000 shares of common stock offered at $9 per share.
