CALVERT CLIFFS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT REFUELING, MAINTENANCE OUTAGE BEGINS FEB. 19

BALTIMORE, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Unit Two at Baltimore Gas & Electric Company's (NYSE: BGE) Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant will be removed from service Feb. 19 for a 105-day refueling and maintenance outage.
The outage, the most comprehensive in the history of Unit Two, will focus on replacing a third of the unit's 217 nuclear fuel assemblies and inspecting and testing a wide range of equipment, including safety- related systems that can be serviced only when the plant is shut down.
Extra measures are being taken to assure a high level of safety during the outage. Actions include installing an additional diesel generator for the duration of the outage to provide a backup source of electricity while one of the plant's permanent diesel generators is serviced.
"Safety and quality remain our highest priorities regardless of the magnitude of work scheduled for the outage," said Robert Denton, Vice President of Nuclear Energy for BG&E.
Unit One at Calvert Cliffs underwent a similar outage in 1992. Both outages are part of an overall program to enhance the level of safety and reliability in all areas of operation.
Calvert Cliffs is located in Calvert County on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Each of the plant's two units produces 825 megawatts of electricity. Together, they can meet the electrical needs of 400,000 residential customers.
