CALTRANS AND AQMD TO EXTEND TEAM RIDESHARE CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE COMMUTERS TO SHARE THE RIDE

Initial Success Means More Team Rideshare Thursdays
LOS ANGELES, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on significant

commuter participation in the Team Rideshare Thursday effort during its first 10 weeks, Caltrans and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) plan to extend the multifaceted Team Rideshare campaign through July 4, Caltrans officials announced today.
"We have seen more than a 25 percent increase in car pool activity since the Team Rideshare campaign began," said Caltrans District 7 Director Jerry B. Baxter. "By extending the program, we hope to see even greater rideshare participation among area commuters in the weeks to come."
According to Baxter, in addition to television and radio advertising, the $1.5 million campaign extension will feature new programs to increase Team Rideshare Thursday participation in the region's ethnic communities and small-employer market.
"We are pleased with the success of the Team Rideshare Thursday effort because it shows us that commuters want to be part of the solution, and that positive approaches to changing people's commuting habits can have an impact," said Baxter.
According to Caltrans traffic monitors, yesterday's traffic counts showed a 26 percent average increase in car pools on monitored freeways in Los Angeles and Orange counties, based on historical data. Los Angeles County reported a 17 percent increase, and in Orange County, the increase was 35 percent.
Sponsored by Caltrans and the AQMD, the four-month Team Rideshare campaign is designed to help drivers realize a decrease in the amount of time spent on freeways because of congestion. By increasing the number of people carried in each peak-hour vehicle, traffic lanes are able to do the job for which they were intended -- to move commuters efficiently. By alleviating congestion, the Team Rideshare campaign also hopes to reduce the pollution caused by cars idling in congestion.
