CALLER ID DISPLAY UNIT AVAILABLE FOR RENT

ATLANTA, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Want to see who's calling you -- but not sure you want to invest in the equipment that displays the number?
BellSouth announced today that Caller ID customers in South Carolina will now have the option to rent the calling number display equipment used with the service. If successful, the rental option will be extended to other BellSouth states.
Under an agreement with Innotrac Corporation, BellSouth customers in South Carolina and Tennessee will be able to lease a BellSouth Products display unit for $4.00 a month. Rental charges will appear on their monthly telephone bill.
"Some of our customers have told us that they like the idea of Caller ID but don't want to purchase the display unit outright until they're sure the service is right for them," said Larry Hanger, project manager for BellSouth Telecommunications. "This arrangement will help meet those needs."
Caller ID is one of BellSouth's fastest-growing consumer services, with over 300,000 customers. It is available in all of the states served by the company. BellSouth recently introduced a new version of this service -- Caller ID Deluxe -- that permits customers to see both the number and name of the calling party.
BellSouth is the largest of the former Bell local companies, serving over 18.7 million lines in nine southeastern states.
