CALIFORNIA RICE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
 ADDRESSES STATE BOARD
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In a presentation to the State Board of Food and Agriculture yesterday, John Roberts, executive director of the California Rice Industry Association, said the state's rice industry has been praised for its cooperative efforts to reduce rice pesticide levels to zero in the Sacramento River.
"Today I wish to share with you -- with some considerable degree of pride -- some of the success of the California rice industry in the area of pest management.
"The California rice industry has been held as exemplary by officials of the California EPA and the state's Regional Water Board regarding the successes of the California Rice Pesticide Management Program."
Roberts said that the rice industry's establishment of the program has significantly reduced the amount of pesticide levels found in the Sacramento River.
"The California Rice Pesticide Management Program reduced total pesticide loads in the Sacramento River attributable to rice production from 40,000 pounds in 1982 to 218 pounds in 1991, a 99.5 percent reduction."
Roberts told the board that the figure has been reduced an additional 40 pounds this year and that the rice industry is continuing its efforts to work with regulators to maintain and improve the river's pesticide levels.
John Kautz, president of the State Board of Food and Agriculture, said in response to Roberts' presentation, "The rice industry is doing a marvelous job of correcting a problem we can all work toward. However, the difficulty is that it is still not possible to totally farm without the use of chemicals."
