CALIFORNIA NETS $28.9 MILLION AS STATE'S SHARE OF FEDERAL MINERAL REVENUES IN 1992

CAMARILLO, Calif., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The State of California received $28,984,483.52 as its 1992 share of minerals revenues collected from federal public lands located within its borders and from federal offshore tracts adjacent to its seaward boundary, announced the Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) today.
"The money, $3,429,750.03 of which came from the offshore tracts, represents the state's share of bonuses, rents and royalties," said Acting MMS Director Carolita Kallaur.
In addition to this continuing share of revenues, California was paid $20,230,000 by the federal government as part of its 8(g) tracts settlement in April 1992.
Through its Royalty Management Program, the Minerals Management Service is responsible for collecting, accounting for, auditing and disbursing revenues associated with mineral leases on federal and Indian lands.
"A state is entitled to a share of the mineral revenues collected from federal lands located within that state's boundaries. From the majority of federal lands, states and the federal government share the revenues: 50 percent to the state, 40 percent to the Reclamation Fund for water projects and 10 percent to the U.S. Treasury. One exception, Alaska, gets a 90-percent share, as prescribed by the Alaska Statehood Act," explained Dr. J. Lisle Reed, regional director of the MMS Pacific Outer Continental Shelf Region, whose office is located in Camarillo.
"Coastal states, including California, with federal offshore tracts adjacent to their seaward boundaries, receive 27 percent of those mineral royalties as well," Reed added.
Disbursements are made to states on a monthly basis, as revenues are collected. A total of $472,286,726.90 was distributed to 35 states in 1992 as their share of revenues collected by the MMS.
