CALGENE NAMES RODERICK STACEY AS PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER; COMPANY NAMES HEADS OF OILS AMD COTTON DIVISIONS

 DAVIS, Calif., Dec. 2 ~PRNewswire~ -- Calgene Inc. (OTC: CGNE) today announced that Roderick N. Stacey has been named president and chief operating officer. Stacey, who has served as a Calgene director since 1990, will be responsible for the company's newly formed oils and cotton divisions as well as corporate finance and administration. Stacey has over 22 years experience in the international agricultural seed industry, including 10 years in Europe and North America as a senior manager with the Nickerson Seed Co., at that time the international seed business of the Shell Chemical Co. Stacey was also the founder and chief executive officer of United Agriseeds Inc., an entrepreneurial research-based agricultural seed company that was sold to the Dow Chemical Co. in 1987. He also served as Chairman of the Intellectual Property Rights Committee of the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) from 1988 through 1991.

With Rod Stacey and Tom Churchwell, chief executive officer of Calgene Fresh joining me, we have the senior leadership in place to successfully launch and build major businesses around our genetically engineered oils, cotton and tomatoes."
 The Company also announced that it has formed separate oils and cotton divisions to optimize market focus and the integration of its core businesses with their respective research and product development units. "Divisionalization is a natural evolution for us as our genetically engineered products approach the market and follows the successful model of Calgene Fresh earlier this year," stated Salquist.
 Andrew Baum, formerly Senior Vice President of Operations for Calgene Inc. has been named President, Oils Division. John Callahan, formerly Vice President Product Development has been named Senior Vice President Cotton, and will be responsible for the launch of Calgene's Bromotol(TM) cotton product, planned for 1994. Bud Hughes will continue as General Manager of Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Co., Calgene's wholly owned cotton seed company. Baum, Callahan and Hughes will all report to Rod Stacey.
 The Company also announced that Diana Cook has been elected Vice President, Human Resources. Cook has human resources responsibility for the Company's 311 employees and eight operating locations in the United States.
 Calgene is an agribusiness biotechnology company that is developing improved plant varieties and plant products for the seed, food and specialty chemical industries. The Company has four operating subsidiaries: Ameri-Can Pedigreed Seed Co., Calgene Co., Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Co., and Calgene Fresh Inc.
