CALGENE FRESH ENTERS INTO PRODUCTION AGREEMENTS WITH LEADING FRESH TOMATO PACKERS; YEAR-ROUND SUPPLY TO COME FROM THREE GROWING REGIONS
EVANSTON, Ill., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Calgene Inc. (NASDAQ: CGNE) announced today that Meyer Tomatoes Inc. of King City, Calif., Taylor and Fulton Inc. of Palmetto, Fla., and Gulfstream Tomato Packers of Perrine, Fla., will supply its subsidiary, Calgene Fresh, with fresh tomato varieties grown to the company's specifications for its proprietary FLAVR SAVR(TM) tomato product line. Meyer Tomatoes is one of the largest producers in the western hemisphere with growing and packing operations in California and Mexico. Taylor and Fulton and Gulfstream Tomato Packers supply fresh tomatoes year-round from growing operations located throughout Florida and into Virginia.
"With these agreements we have achieved our objective of establishing a dedicated year-round source of premium quality, fresh tomato varieties from all the major North American tomato growing regions," said Daniel O. Wagster, vice president of operations. "These producers are long-standing leaders in the fresh tomato industry with the grower network and productive capacity to supply very large volumes of fresh tomatoes. Their locations are complementary with one another and together provide a reliable source of high quality product from at least two growing regions an any time throughout the year."
Calgene Fresh, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Calgene Inc. was formed in January 1992 to produce, market and distribute premium quality branded fresh produce. Its initial product, the FLAVR SAVR tomato, will feature fresh tomato varieties with superior flavor and reduced spoilage for the $3.5 billion U.S. wholesale fresh tomato market. Calgene's patented FLAVR SAVR gene effectively turns down the level of production of an enzyme that causes all tomatoes to soften. FLAVR SAVR tomatoes can, therefore, be picked after their flavor has fully developed on the vine and then delivered fresh to supermarkets ready to eat.
Robert L. Meyer, President and owner of Meyer Tomatoes, said, "We take great pride in our long history of leadership in innovation in the tomato industry. Calgene Fresh's proprietary FLAVR SAVR technology will enable tomato producers to make major strides in delivering higher value, more flavorful fresh tomatoes to the retail grocery and food service industries on a year-round basis."
"This relationship with Calgene Fresh brings a whole new dimension to tomato production in our region," said Jay Taylor, president of Taylor and Fulton. "Producing a proprietary, branded product is something the industry has been striving to achieve for a very long time, and the FLAVR SAVR tomato is a tremendous opportunity to significantly raise the industry's standards for quality."
Calgene Fresh will expand production and market development efforts this year and expects FLAVR SAVR tomatoes to be available to consumers on a broad scale in 1993.
Calgene Inc. is an agribusiness biotechnology company developing proprietary plant varieties and plant products for the seed, food and specialty chemical industries. Calgene has four operating subsidiaries: Calgene Fresh Inc., Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Co., Ameri-can Pedigreed Seed Co. and Calgene Chemical.
