CALGENE FRESH COMPLETES PRE-MARKET TESTING ON FLAVR SAVR(TM) TOMATO; DATA SUBMITTED TO FDA AND AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC

EVANSTON, Ill., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Calgene Fresh has completed what it believes to be the final data on the FLAVR SAVR tomato and has submitted this data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its review and approval. The data demonstrate that the FLAVR SAVR tomato, expected to be the first commercially available genetically engineered whole food, is as safe and nutritious as currently available fresh tomatoes. FLAVR SAVR tomatoes do not soften as rapidly as other tomatoes. As a result, FLAVR SAVR tomatoes can be left on the vine until their natural flavor fully develops. The filing responds to questions raised by the FDA during their review of data previously submitted with Calgene's Aug. 12, 1991, Request for Advisory Opinion.
The data for this submission result from several comprehensive nutritional and safety studies conducted by the company. The company voluntarily submitted its safety data for rigorous review by a panel of nationally recognized food scientists who have unanimously concluded that these data demonstrate the safety of the FLAVR SAVR tomato. "FLAVR SAVR tomatoes are as safe for human consumption as other tomatoes that are currently part of the human diet," said panel member Dr. Ian Munro, a toxicology consultant who formerly served as director general for the Food Directorate in Canada's Department of Health and Welfare.
This filing supplements the extensive compositional data previously submitted and published for public comment including the results of more than four years of field trials and scientific research conducted over the past eight years to establish the quality and consumer value of the FLAVR SAVR tomato. Earlier pre-market tests conducted on FLAVR SAVR tomatoes have examined the nutritional value, potential for increasing levels of naturally occurring tomato toxins, horticultural traits, fungal resistance, the softening rate and other characteristics.
In addition to providing comprehensive data to the federal agencies responsible for ensuring the safety of the nation's food supply, Calgene Fresh has previously published its research results in a special technical report, "Safety Assessment of Genetically Engineered Fruits and Vegetables: A Case Study of the FLAVR SAVR(TM) Tomato." The report is available from CRC Press at 800-272-7737.
Calgene Fresh, a wholly owned subsidiary of Calgene Inc. (NASDAQ: CGNE), was formed in January 1992 to develop, distribute and sell fresh produce. Its initial product, FLAVR SAVR tomatoes, will feature fresh tomato varieties with summertime farmstand tomato flavor available on a year-round basis. Calgene Fresh has publicly committed to providing information to consumers identifying its tomatoes as genetically engineered.
