CALGENE ESTABLISHES TREHALOSE PROGRAM

DAVIS, Calif., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- Calgene Inc. (NASDAQ: CGNE) announced that it has exclusively licensed the genes that convert glucose into trehalose, a simple sugar that has been shown to preserve flavor and texture in frozen, dehydrated or dried foods.
The trehalose-synthesizing genes were isolated and characterized by a research team led by Dr. Arne Strom of the University of Tromso, Norway's leading research university. Strom and his colleagues have the most advanced program in the characterization of the trehalose- synthesizing genes, and have been studying the role of trehalose in protecting cells subjected to osmotic stress for the past 10 years. "We believe that trehalose has the potential to improve a broad range of food products, and Calgene has the scientific expertise to capitalize on this potential," said Strom.
Trehalose is a non-reducing disaccharide composed entirely of glucose, a basic building block of starches and complex sugars. Studies have shown that trehalose preserves the "fresh" flavor and texture of foodstuffs such as milk, eggs and tomato paste by reducing the degradation of proteins and other compounds during freezing or drying.
"We plan to move quickly to establish commercial relationships to exploit the opportunities in the food ingredient business and to engineer whole fruits and vegetables," said Lloyd Kunimoto, Calgene's vice president of corporate development. "The current price of trehalose is about $100 per pound. Our objectives are to dramatically reduce the price through directly converting glucose to trehalose in sugar-accumulating crops such as sugarbeet and sugarcane, and in fruits and vegetables. This will create a family of products for the food industry."
Calgene is an agribusiness biotechnology company that is developing improved plant varieties and plant products for the seed, food and specialty chemical industries. The company has four operating subsidiaries: Ameri-Can Pedigreed Seed Co., Calgene Co., Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Co. and Calgene Fresh Inc.
