CALGENE'S FOOD ADDITIVE PETITION FORMALLY FILED BY FDA; FLAVR SAVR TOMATO LAUNCH ON SCHEDULE

DAVIS, Calif., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Calgene Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: CGNE) today announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has notified the company that its Food Additive Petition, No. 3A4364, as amended, has been formally accepted for filing as of June 21, 1993. The petition covers the use of the kanamycin selectable marker gene as a processing aid in the development of genetically engineered plant varieties of tomato, oilseed rape and cotton. The acceptance follows the June 4, 1993, submission by Calgene of the updated Environmental Assessment requested by the FDA.
"Normally the filing starts the data review period, but for the marker gene, the review has been in progress for 2-1/2 years," said Roger Salquist, Calgene's chairman and CEO. Salquist added, "This action by the FDA indicates to us that their review is nearing completion."
The kanamycin resistant selectable marker gene data were initially submitted as a Request for Advisory Opinion on Nov. 26, 1990. After extensive review and consultations with the FDA, Calgene requested on Jan. 4, 1993, that the FDA convert the data package to a food additive petition. Subsequently, the FDA requested that Calgene revise and reformat the previously submitted Environmental Assessment package to meet the more stringent Food Additive Petition requirements. An Environmental Assessment is a standard component of a food additive petition. The formal filing is a routine step in the food additive petition review process that indicates the FDA believes the petition is complete.
"We anticipate the publication of the food additive regulation for the marker gene within the same time frame as the FDA's opinion letter on our requested Advisory Opinion for the FLAVR SAVR tomato," said Tom Churchwell, Calgene Fresh president and CEO. Calgene requested on Aug. 12, 1991, that the FDA issue an Advisory Opinion that the FLAVR SAVR is just like any other tomato with the exception that it had been genetically modified to soften more slowly than other tomatoes. The company received U.S. Department of Agriculture approval for commercial production and distribution of the FLAVR SAVR tomato on Oct. 19, 1992. "All signs indicate we are on schedule for our Fall 1993 introduction of the FLAVR SAVR tomato," Churchwell added.
Calgene is an agribusiness biotechnology company that is developing improved plant varieties and plant products for the fresh tomato, cotton seed and special industrial and edible oils markets.
Calgene fresh, a wholly owned subsidiary of Calgene Inc., is a fresh produce sales and distribution company. Its initial product, MacGregor's(R) tomatoes, feature fresh tomato varieties with summertime farmstand tomato flavor available on a year-round basis.
