CALERA ANNOUNCES INTEL AS NEW OEM FOR FAXGRABBER TECHNOLOGY CALERA'S FAXGRABBER INCLUDED IN INTEL'S FAXABILITY PLUS/OCR SOFTWARE
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Calera Recognition Systems, Inc. today announced Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) is the first OEM to incorporate Calera's FAXGrabber fax conversion utility in a third-party end user fax software product. Intel's new FAXability Plus/OCR software is the first complete send-and-receive fax software package for PC fax card users.
FAXGrabber, which is for the Windows 3.1 platform and began shipping in January for $149 (SRP), enables fax card users to convert incoming fax image files into editable text that can be indexed, routed via e-mail, or incorporated into other documents in more than 67 word processing, spreadsheet or desktop publishing applications.
"Intel turned to Calera because, first and foremost, they recognized we have the best OCR technology, especially when applied to fax images," said Stephen Hayden, Calera president and chief executive officer, "and second, we have tested that technology in our FAXGrabber end user product, and it is receiving wide acceptance. One measure of FAXGrabber's acceptance is its demonstration by Microsoft President Bill Gates in his Comdex introduction of Windows 3.1 last week."
Calera and Intel believe that PC fax will become a standard in the office because it reduces the cost, time and difficulty of sending and receiving faxes. With the FAXGrabber end user product, or the technology integrated into FAXability Plus/OCR, end users now can directly incorporate received faxes into business documents without having to rekey information.
Calera also recently announced price reductions of 30 to 40 percent for its award-winning WordScan and WordScan Plus OCR software in a move designed to bring OCR in line with mainstream business applications and falling scanner and fax card prices.
Intel's FAXability Plus/OCR offers complete inbound and outbound PC fax capabilities and is compatible with a wide range of fax modems, including the Intel family of SatisFAXtion modems. With FAXability Plus/OCR, users can send faxes from within any Microsoft Windows application, receive faxes from other PCs or fax machines, and view, print or edit the incoming faxes.
FAXability Plus/OCR, which was announced today, will be available from Intel in May 1992 through all major software resellers for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $249.
Intel is an international manufacturer of microcomputer components, modules and systems. Both Intel and Calera are members of the OCR/Scanner/Fax Association, an association formed to promote, among other things, interoperability between OCR, scanners, fax and mainstream application programs.
Calera Recognition Systems develops, markets and sells utilities, applications and systems-level products for converting paper-based information into electronic data and integrating that data into office applications. Calera products save users time, money and system storage costs by eliminating the need for manually rekeying data and by reducing large image files to text.
Calera, headquartered in Sunnyvale, is the leader in integrating Optical Character Recognition software technologies into scanner and facsimile devices for portables and desktop systems. Calera's products, which range in price from $149 to $45,000, are sold worldwide through OEM, system integrator and reseller sales channels.
