CALDWELL-SPARTIN SELECTS DIGITAL FOR $28 MILLION PLUS MULTIVENDOR OUTSOURCING CONTRACT

MAYNARD, Mass., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) was recently awarded a five-year, $28 million contract to provide multi-vendor system support services and upgrades from PDP systems to VAX 3100 and 4000 systems for approximately 200 of Caldwell-Spartin's client companies. Support delivered by Digital includes multivendor hardware maintenance, help desk services, system staging and rollout, and other customized services.
The installed base that Digital is supporting consists of Digital computers and several hundred different peripheral products from more than 75 vendors. The systems are geographically dispersed at approximately 1,000 sites nationwide.
Based in Houston and Atlanta, Caldwell-Spartin supplies office software to both nationwide and independent temporary personnel service companies. According to Lynn Caldwell, co-founder and vice president of Caldwell-Spartin, "Our customers' businesses are dramatically affected if even a single branch is down. If we are going to rely on anyone other than ourselves, we need a vendor that has the same sense of urgency as we do about uptime."
Co-founder and President Steve Caldwell added, "We're very committed to Digital systems. As Digital introduces new products, we believe it has a significant advantage over other service providers in terms of technical support and access to spare parts for its systems."
Caldwell cited several other factors that helped them make their choice:
-- Digital's high level of expertise and large number of field
engineers strategically located across the U.S.
-- The ability to provide international support when Caldwell-
 Spartin expands overseas.
-- The inclusion of a customer program manager to ensure the
 program's success.
"We're excited about this opportunity," said John Rando, vice president, Multivendor Customer Services at Digital. "Our Multivendor Service experience is right for the business needs of Caldwell-Spartin. Our service professionals and broad service capability deliver the high- quality of technology integration and systems availability that Caldwell-Spartin requires."
Founded in 1976, Caldwell-Spartin started as both an independent temporary personnel services company and a software supplier within that industry. In 1984, it joined forces with Spartin Computer Systems to develop a product that supported both back office (payroll, billing and management reporting) and front office (sales and operations) functions. Caldwell-Spartin uses its own Atlanta top-ten ranked temporary staffing business as a beta test site for its software products, which are licensed to approximately 10,000 users.
Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Mass., is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software and services. Digital pioneered and leads the industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor computing. Digital and its business partners deliver the power to use the best integrated solutions -- from desktop to data center -- in open information environments.
