CALDOR, INC. COLLECTS FOR UNICEF

NORWALK, Conn., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Caldor, Inc., headquartered in Norwalk, today donated $13,800.00 to the U.S. Committee for UNICEF. The donation, collected in 150 Caldor stores during the month of October, represents the first effort of a major retailer collecting for UNICEF.
Throughout the entire month of October "UNICEF boxes" were placed on checkout counters at 150 Caldor stores in the Northeast. The program was supported with in-store signing announcing Caldor's support in the fight against hunger.
UNICEF has collected funds since the 1920s to aid community-based services for children. This, however, is the first time a major retailer has joined forces in the fight for children. "Through this effort, our customers were able to show their support for UNICEF," said Gary Vasques, senior vice president of advertising, "and we are very excited to be the pioneers for this truly deserving organization."
"We want to express our appreciation," said Louise Sellers, chairman of the board of trustees of the Greater New York Committee for UNICEF. "Because just 50 cents a day can provide medicine to treat a child with tuberculosis for two weeks, this very generous donation will make a significant difference in the lives of hundreds of children."
