CALAMITY RUTH JIBE.
A HEAD teachers' leader accused Labour yesterday of running schools like cowboys - branding Education supremo Ruth Kelly "Calamity Jane".
John White, President of the National Association of Head Teachers, stormed: "We've had Charles 'Bronson' Clarke and now it's Calamity Jane.
"If we were talking about builders we'd be describing them as cowboys."
He accused Ms Kelly of ducking her first big test by failing to respond to the Tomlinson report and overhaul examinations.
"We had a chance to reform our flawed A-level system and she blew it," Mr White told the NAHT annual conference at Telford.
He added: "We cannot deny the Government has invested more in education but the investment has not gone into classrooms.
"We still have armies of advisers with obscure posts."
Calamity Jane was a 19th-Century figure from the Wild West who chewed tobacco, wore men's clothes and survived shoot-outs with Indians.
