CAGLEY & ASSOCIATES: RESTORATION OF THE STATUE OF FREEDOM

WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- In 1991, Cagley & Associates was retained by the Architect of the Capitol to be the structural engineering consultants for a study to determine the options for restoration of the Statue of Freedom on the U.S. Capitol Dome. This study included an evaluation of the structural condition of the 130- year-old statue as well as the development of several alternatives for removing the statue from the dome and placing it on the East Plaza.
At the completion of the 1991 study, a decision was made to remove the statue by use of a helicopter and to accomplish the restoration of the bronze statue on a platform on the East Plaza and to restore the cast-iron ornamentation which serves as a base for the statue in place on the top of the dome.
In 1993, Cagley & Associates was retained to prepare detailed drawings to accomplish this task as well as to oversee the structural aspects of the project in the field. The statue was removed on May 9, 1993, has been restored and has been replaced on the dome today.
Cagley & Associates is a consulting structural engineering firm headquartered in Rockville, Md., with affiliate offices in Philadelphia and Houston. "We are proud to have been a part of this project and to have made a contribution to U.S. engineering history. To us, our opportunity to do this structural engineering design involving this priceless historic artifact has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, or to be more exact, once in two lifetimes," James Cagley, structural engineering spokesperson, said.
