CAERE SHIPS OMNIPAGE DIRECT FOR THE MACINTOSH; NOVICE AND
EXPERIENCED OMNIPAGE USERS APPLAUD OCR PRODUCTIVITY BENEFITS
LOS GATOS, Calif., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Caere(R) Corp. (NASDAQ: CAER) today announced that OmniPage Direct(TM) for the Macintosh has been released for shipping and will be available from a worldwide network of personal computer resellers. Targeted at the office user new to scanning, Caere's OmniPage Direct optical character recognition (OCR) software is an easy-to-use, affordable and highly accurate text recognition solution.
According to Rick Doherty, CEO of Kyra Corp., a technology consulting firm, and editor-in-chief of "Envisioneering," a personal information technologies newsletter, "OmniPage Direct represents the shortest distance between raw paper and a polished, compound document. Macintosh users new to scanning will find OmniPage Direct is an empowering personal information desk accessory."
To allow users to try OCR on their own documents, Caere is shipping, for a limited time, a free trial version of OmniPage Direct, called a "Try-Pack(TM)," with every HP ScanJet IIp flatbed scanner. As part of the Try-Pack, purchasers of the HP ScanJet IIp can contact Caere directly and have the software enabled over the phone for $300. Users may also obtain OmniPage Direct from Caere's resellers, including Egghead Software, which recently signed an agreement with the company to sell both OmniPage Direct for the PC and Caere's hand- held scanner, Typist Plus Graphics(TM) for the PC, in some 180 Egghead stores across the country. Productivity Gains Significant for OmniPage Customers
Early OmniPage Direct customers cite the short learning curve and immediate productivity gains as the most significant benefits of the software. Jeff Harkins, department head of accounting at the University of Idaho, for example, has saved several weeks of work by using OmniPage Direct to scan in 2,000 accounting abstracts for an accounting journal he publishes. As an initial Try-Pack customer, Harkins was especially pleased to receive a full working version of the software quickly and easily. "I have enjoyed tremendous success with OmniPage Direct -- the product has actually exceeded my expectations," commented Harkins. "In addition to ease of use and direct access capabilities, OmniPage Direct's accuracy has been very impressive."
For Houston-based Baylor College of Medicine, OmniPage Professional is one of three Caere products used by several hundred faculty and staff at the college's Computing Resource Center. According to Technical Consultant Nancy Wang, OmniPage Professional has been instrumental in expediting the production process for textbooks and other medical documents. "Typically our medical staff receives documents from a wide variety of sources, both domestic and international," said Wang. "With OmniPage Professional, the staff is able to scan these documents quickly and easily and eliminate the need for retyping and translation." Easy Access and Fast, Accurate Text Recognition
Among OmniPage Direct's breakthrough features is the ability to access the software from within any text-based Macintosh application. Users can then insert the new scanned text directly into their existing application. These direct access and input capabilities significantly reduce the complexity of scanning text and numbers into applications and allow users to feel as comfortable with scanning as printing.
OmniPage Direct further simplifies the text-recognition process with an automated user interface that sets a new standard in OCR accuracy. Through the use of HP AccuPage(TM) or Caere's AnyPage(TM) technologies, OmniPage Direct automatically sets the optimal brightness level for OCR on every region of a page. This process requires no user intervention and automatically improves recognition of poor-quality documents. OmniPage Direct also automatically interprets document orientation -- portrait or landscape -- and character type, which allows users to achieve high-quality results with minimal learning time.
OmniPage Direct features Caere's AnyFont(TM) technology, an advanced omnifont technology that allows scanners to recognize virtually any document, regardless of number of typefaces or columns used. In addition, OmniPage Direct recognizes nearly all non-stylized fonts (in sizes ranging from 6 points to 72 points) at speeds of up to 2,000 words per minute, depending on the computer's speed. The software can also read 11 European languages and automatically separates graphics from text and numbers.
OmniPage Direct also supports the TWAIN API and works with most of the leading desktop scanners. U.S. List Prices and System Requirements
The suggested retail price of OmniPage Direct is $595 and the product is available immediately from a worldwide network of personal computer resellers. OmniPage Direct for the Macintosh will work with a Mac II or higher and requires 4 megabytes of RAM, System 7 and a hard disk with at least 4 megabytes of available space. Company Information
