 CAERE CORP. ANNOUNCES HIGH-PERFORMANCE, EASY-TO-USE
 COLOR IMAGE-EDITING SOFTWARE
LOS GATOS, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Caere(R) Corp. (NASDAQ: CAER) today announced Image Assistant(TM), the first professional-quality color image-editing software designed for both business users and graphics professionals. Image Assistant's automatic tools and "Assist Mode" remove the complexity of current imaging products, while an unsurpassed feature set includes capabilities normally found only with add-on programs. Image Assistant is also the first professional-level image-editing software available for both Windows and Macintosh platforms.
"Image Assistant is for professionals but it also gives color control to the rest of us," said Larry Miller, Caere's vice president of marketing. "Now any business can use color; from slide presentations at sales meetings to photos on data sheets."
"As the photo-hobbyist and desktop-computing markets intersect, users will want more and more products like Caere's Image Assistant," said Pieter Hartsook, editor and publisher of The Hartsook Letter, a market research newsletter dedicated to the Macintosh community. "The powerful features and simple interface Image Assistant provides will clearly benefit home users and graphics artists alike."
 Assist Mode
Assist Mode lets users choose just the right effects for an image by looking at sample thumbnails on-screen. For example, when setting contrast, the user will see 15 samples of how an image will look with 15 different contrast settings. By clicking on the sample that looks right, the image is transformed. The user makes all the basic color-editing decisions with their eye rather than with their knowledge of percentages, ratios and so on. Sharpening, color levels, as well as special effects such as embossing and negating are all available choices. Multiple levels of Undo and Redo are also available.
 Professional Mode
Although a beginner can use Image Assistant, its true power and versatility are clear to the professional graphic artist. They can edit in bi-level, grayscale, RGB or CYMK. Shrink-to-fit and magic wand tools provide fast, accurate object selection. Pressure-sensitive stylus pads are supported for extra control. The user can convert images between color, grayscale, and bilevel tones and access the PANTONE(R) color matching system. Image Assistant has all the tools and features expected from a high-end image processing product. The bonus is a clear, logical interface and a refined, optimized engine that provides more precise results faster than any other image editor.
 Automatic Scanning Controls
Image Assistant completely automates the task of capturing images. For example, imagine scanning in a photo from a page in a magazine. Image Assistant finds the photo and separates it from unwanted text. It crops the photo, eliminating excess white space. It rotates the photo so it's aligned when the user starts to edit it. It determines whether an image is line-art, grayscale, or color and opens it in the appropriate environment. Background filters automatically remove moire patterns. Besides these automatic features, complete manual control is provided for all settings if preferred.
Image Assistant's time-saving impact is enormous. Traditionally, a user had to scan and rescan an image several times before having a usable image to edit. Automatic scanning controls mean one scan. The user doesn't need to realign, rescan, reset, rescan, readjust, rescan -- the procedures still necessary with other image-editing products.
 Print Sampler
Everyone knows how long it can take to print a color image -- and how often the user adjusts settings, reprints and then adjusts the settings again. Image Assistant prints out a sampler of how an image will look with up to nine different settings. The user chooses the desired look from the thumbnails in the sampler. They see how varying degrees of sharpening and dot gain will affect the image. Then they can print one, final copy.
 System Requirements
Image Assistant is available for both Macintosh and Windows environments. On the Macintosh, Image Assistant requires a Mac II or above, System 6.0.7 or higher, and 5MB RAM. The Windows version requires a '386sx or higher computer, Windows 3.0 or above, and 5MB RAM.
 Pricing and Availability
Image Assistant's suggested U.S. retail price is $495. Currently shipping in both Macintosh and Windows versions, it is available from Caere's worldwide network of computer resellers that includes personal computer and office superstores, computer dealers and mail order. To locate the nearest Caere dealer, interested parties should call Caere directly at 800-535-7226.
